Electric bikes were first invented in 1839 by German inventor Carl von Drais who patented his Laufmaschine (or “running machine”) as early as 1817 but never actually built one until later on in life when he was inspired by watching children play with hobby horses at a fairground near Mannheim Castle where he lived at that time (he also invented other things like skates). BionX is a Canadian manufacturer that designs and builds electric bike drivetrains. Their system uses a battery pack mounted to the frame, with a motor in the rear wheel hub or front fork. The company has been around since 1999, but it wasn’t until 2002 that they began producing complete bikes under their own name. They now offer six different models of e-bikes with varying power levels, including an off-road model called the BionX RXS which uses 27 speeds and weighs almost 50 pounds!
